Afterthoughts on the Word . . .
by Pastor Devin

The focus of this year for the youth is serving.  We do so many fun activities but as we looked back upon them we realized the only ones we were serving was ourselves.  In the coming months we have so many opportunities for serving others and being the hands and feet of Jesus.  A couple of opportunities are:  ministering to the homeless at the LA Mission, on the streets of San Diego handing out sandwiches and water, working at the San Diego Rescue Mission, raising money for kids in starving countries during 30 Hour Famine and our mission trip to Tecate, Mexico this spring.  We don't have to go to another country or participate in a global event like 30 Hour Famine to serve others.  In fact we can serve those around us in very simple and easy ways.  We can mow someone's lawn, walk their dog, babysit a neighbor's kid, buy a friend a lunch but the most important aspect of serving is being available for God to use us.  If we are willing to be available, to be used by God we will encounter specific opportunities God has designed for us to serve and love others.  If we are to live out our mission and call we must put into practice what Romans 12 says,

"Love must be sincere.  Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.  Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.  Honor one another above yourselves.  Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.  Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.  Share with God's people who are in need.  Practice hospitality."

When we are loving and serving others we are serving the Lord.  In my self reflection I often ask myself if I am doing enough to serve those around me and the answer is always no.  Yet the small, insignificant acts of love and service I do, God rejoices in them.  Our Heavenly Father takes our small contributions and touches people's lives that are either directly or indirectly connected to our gifts of love.  Do not be discouraged but encouraged for God wants to rejoice with us.

Marinating in God's Love...
. . . You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.  And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere.  Acts 1:8
